Your Mommy Kills Animals And Propagandists Bully People

The Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), which sourcewatch says is “a front group for the restaurant, alcohol and tobacco industries. It runs media campaigns which oppose the efforts of scientists, doctors, health advocates, environmentalists and groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving…” is opposing a new animal rights documentary, Your Mommy Kills Animals by “threatening film distributors (including Amazon) with lawsuits should they decide to carry the film” (according to Taste Better).
Looks like it’s working: I searched Amazon and couldn’t find the film. But luckily, it’s at Tower. I ordered myself a copy. (It’s cheap.)

Apparently, CCF invested in the film but didn’t like the final version. They sued and won, but since in America money = anything else of value, the monetary award of $360,000 was considered by the judge enough. CCF wasn’t awarded the sole right to distribute, like they wanted (so they could bury the film instead of make money from it). And they still earn license royalties.
AnimalBlawg explains “the story behind Your Mommy Kills Animals — it started life as a PETA hit piece, but it grew up to be an eloquent defender of free speech and animal activists.” AnimalBlawg goes into more detail about the film if you’re interested in a review along with a more complete story of the surrounding legal situation. It’s pretty funny, in my opinion, because it shows what’s wrong with our legal and political system:
- Money often isn’t an adequate remedy for injustice (not that there was injustice in this case, but you get my point)
- Some lobbyists use money and lies to bully not just politicians, but all people
I’ve seen pieces of the documentary and it looks pretty damn fair. The real issue seems to be the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act and the mischaracterization of the animal rights movement as ‘terrorists’. It’s about the conflict in the US between money and free speech.
