You Can Be Selfish And Still Be A Vegan!

me

Hey out there, non-vegans! The word on the street is that vegans are like religious freaks, thinking they are better than anyone else.  You might even hear that vegans are sissy creatures who are horrified by animal abuse. And worst of all, some vegans give give give to the animals, care about the animals, even sacrifice for the animals. So how do you fit in here, you red-blooded, Humvee-driving, highly-toned selfish character you? You care about YOURSELF more than anyone or anything else.

You like working out because it’s good for your body. You study the market to make the right choices. You work hard.  You live the American Dream, even in another country if it suits you.

Well, the cool thing is that going vegan is actually a seriously selfish thing to do. Not because you can throw off the waiters in that trendy restaurant. Not because you can point to your slick non-leather shoes, knowing your friends want them too.  But because it’s the best thing you can do for your body.

Study after study confirms that vegans live longer, have lower rates of heart disease, aren’t as fat, have lower rates of cancer, just generally are healthier than their omnivorous counterparts. This is the best kind of oneupmanship. It’s true that living well is the best revenge. Of course this does not mean living on potato chips and vegan pizza. But there is no big trick to eating well once you knock those cholesterol-laden, cancer-causing elements from the menu.

If you eat out a lot check out the restaurant guides in this post. If you prepare – or live with someone who prepares – your meals at home, and you need to know more, check this post, offering resources for newbies.

It’s the selfish thing to do. Of course, if you want to be selfless, it’s also the selfless thing to do.

  3. Some studies have indicated that altruism feels good, too. So even when you’re being selfless, it can also be selfish!
