Why Vegan?
Why Vegan?
Lots of vegans have answered here and there. The blogger, Nella, at Increasing Veganicity, who described herself as “someone renewing their veganness” answered that question and wrote:
“I’ll be open about this from the start - my reason for being vegan is 100% linked to animal rights. No other factor is capable of motivating me to stick to a decision which, lets face it, makes my day-to-day life that tiny bit more complicated.”
She also says
“I don’t follow any party lines. I eat fake meat and wear fake fur. In particular, I eat tofu effigies of sacred cows.”
Sounds like me
What’s your reason for going and staying vegan?

Exactly. People always assume it’s for my own health. I’m 20 lbs. overweight! And proud of it! I wear it as a badge. “See, I can be vegan for 5 years and not turn into a pale skinny wimp. So there!” I love that my weight also silently drives home the point that I’m not doing this for me (sure, I’m healthier because I’m vegan, but that’s not The Point). I’m doing it for the health of the chicken, the cow, the salmon, the goat…
That all sounded less rambly in my head. Oh well.
You know, Al, some studies are showing that people who are slightly overweight have longer lifespans than people are are ‘proper weight.’
Personally, I think it has to do with how people get to ‘proper weight’ and the fact that many do it unhealthily, but it’s also possible our current notion of healthy weight is wrong.
Either way, a stable, manageable weight that doesn’t interfere with lifestyle and health is much better than an unstable weight that bounces up and down or an improper diet that lacks essential nutrients. I say wear the 20 with pride, as you do!
