Why No Dairy?
Here’s a great description of dairy that really helps make the connections:
“As with humans, dairy cows produce milk for their children and therefore only produce milk after giving birth. Impregnation is commonly done by shoving a hand into the cow’s anus to guide an insemination gun that is pushed into the cow’s vagina. This process is repeated every year so she will continue to produce milk. Her baby is taken away from her shortly after birth, destined either to become veal or another dairy cow. After 4 to 6 years of being used by us as a milk machine, her milk production declines and, being no longer of any economic value for us, she is sent to slaughter. Her flesh often ends up in fast food hamburgers. All dairy products, including organic and grass-fed, come from cows destined for the slaughterhouse.“
This comes from L.O.V.E. and does more than illustrate “Why Veganism Is Important.” It also illustrates the connection between sexism and speciesism.

I am sick about what people are doing to animals. How can a person with an conscience at all take little newborn calves away from their mothers? Those mothers and babies need each other. It is a travesty against nature to separate them. I am grieving every day about this.
How can people slaughter little calves just days old? I sometimes wish they would just mercifully euthanize the babies when they are first born to keep from being boxed up in the dark for several days. Then, they slaughter them without any mercy. They drag them, and it is my understanding they don’t stun them first. May God have mercy on this world.
Really? How do you feel about abortion?
Also, human lactation can be induced without pregnancy.
This was interesting… However, i think that some people put too much faith in a cow’s ability to relate to human emotion. @lene harris – you grieve every day about this? With all due respect, your priorities seem to be a bit askew. There are plenty of humans who go through things a whole lot worse than having an artificial inseminator inserted into their vagina on an annual basis. Personally, I would try cleaning up the problems that we have as humans, and when they are fixed, move on to other species.
John, you present a false dichotomy. We can work for both humans and animals. Many times, we can help both at the same time. For example, vegan food for homeless people or vegan bake sales to raise money for human charities. The issues overlap. Ignoring animals’ plight in order to focus on humans has the potential to backfire and harm both humans and animals.
