Why Milk Is Vegan

Why Milk Is Vegan

The dairy industry doesn’t own the word milk. Here’s proof from dictionary.com:

milk
–noun
1. an opaque white or bluish-white liquid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals, serving for the nourishment of their young.
2. this liquid as secreted by cows, goats, or certain other animals and used by humans for food or as a source of butter, cheeses, yogurt, etc.
3. any liquid resembling this, as the liquid within a coconut, the juice or sap of certain plants, or various pharmaceutical preparations.

Notice, how the first definition of milk says the substance is “for the nourishment of their young.” Right there in the definition is a vegan reminder: cow’s milk is for calves, not humans; goat’s milk is for baby goats, not humans.

Cow’s milk and goat’s milk certainly are NOT vegan, but soy milk and rice milk are!

There are lots of kinds of vegan milk:

  • soy milk
  • rice milk
  • hemp milk
  • almond milk
  • coconut milk

Even human breast milk, when provided by consenting women, is vegan.

And here’s food for thought: human infants who are purely breastfed begin their lives as VEGANS!

  1. Whenever I use the word “COW’S- milk” to omni’s they seem offended, like I’m trying to desturb them. They’re the one’s slaughtering cow’s and pumping them pregnent to suck the milk from their hormone-laden tits! I feel HORRIBLE for dairy cows in particular (not that I don’t for any slaughter house animal) because they are seen as “dumb, huge, ugly, useless creatures god put on earth for man”. NEWSFLASH! Is it not obvious HUMANS are the ones over breeding them in refined and horrid conditions to use as thier own “food”. What’s wrong with non-dairy milk, if they gave it a shiot for at least a month, I bet many people would be hooked and free of allergies, asthma and even hate the aftertaste of that horrid “factory murdering animal’s milk”, I personally think the lactose is nasty. way to go! ;)

  2. This was interesting Eccentric. I have actually never considered the definition of “milk,” opting instead to separate “soy milk” from the concept “milk” as much as possible; soy juice for example. With this in mind, however, I have been wrong to do so. The initial definition is enlightening as well — “serving for the nourishment of their young.”

  4. I’m also fond of using ‘cow’s milk’ as opposed to just ‘milk’ to differentiate. I think it’s a good habit to get in to!

  5. I’m with Sarah on that…I use the term ‘cows’ milk’ whenever I am not talking about plant-based milks. I think it’s really important to reclaim the term ‘milk’, especially in view of the dairy industries’ interest in keeping it for themselves.
