Whole Foods’ Vegan Recipes Offer A Bonus

Whole Foods’ Vegan Recipes Offer A Bonus

It’s easy to get discouraged by the handouts offered at Whole Foods Market because of the number of animal products promoted there. But if you go to the Whole Foods website you can pull up a large number of vegan recipes (497 at last count – admittedly the list contains such items as “how to cook butternut squash”, not quite a recipe). And then print out a shopping list for as many as you like.

When you find a recipe you like – for example, Pasta with Greens – you can click on “Add to shopping list”. You do have to register with Whole Foods to use this convenience but it only takes a minute or so.  And you can customize the list.

You create a shopping list, first. So if you want a list for a future event, you can create that and save it, while creating another list for this week’s groceries. For each recipe you can also uncheck any ingredients you may already have on hand.  When you are done, you can take a look at the list and modify it as needed. When you like it, print it, email it, or send it to your phone (I really like this option for small lists).

There are some downsides. Frequently the recipes refer to the optional addition of animal products. These comments always irritate me. And if you are wanting to peruse several recipes in one sitting you don’t get the option of going back to where you were in the list of recipes (although, of course, you can use your brower’s back button).

Other sites offer these types of options as well. VegWeb has a shopping list and recipe box option (also requiring registration). AllRecipes offers a shopping list and recipe box and also offers the ability to adjust the number of servings in a recipe.  All of these sites (and the others out there) work almost the same way.  The primary advantage Whole Foods has is that it lists items that are in its stores. You only have to go to one store to get it all. This is a small advantage these days, of course, when more and more vegan-friendly food is available in standard groceries.
