Which Book Should I Write?

A long time ago I wrote up a list of life goals. On that list I had things like “learn how to ride a motorcycle,” “go skydiving,” “visit Paris,” “buy a house,” and “become a parent.”

I also put something special on that list: “write a book.”

I’ve visited Paris. I’ve gone skydiving and scubadiving (once each; I enjoyed skydiving but I didn’t like scubadiving). I bought a house.

But I haven’t written a book.

I haven’t even gotten started – and who knows if I ever really will – but I’ve got three book ideas. If you’ve got a minute, I’d love to hear your feedback on my potential books:

1. Big Butts, Small Minds: Stupid Things Nonvegans Say
A compilation of hollow excuses that nonvegans give for why they’re not vegan and the vegan rebuttals to those excuses. Straight-forward and honest, this is a collection of “elevator speeches” for animal advocates as well as an insightful and humorous read for everyone else.

2. Kill Time;  Save Animals
A guidebook for the internet-junkie who cares about animals, this book offers a plethora of options for advocating for animals online. Making graphics and videos, blogging and vlogging, and all that other fun stuff adds up. It might seem like you’re just killing time, but as a web agitator, you’ll change minds and save lives.

3. All The Females
The intersection of veganism and feminism, presented for a large audience. This book would be an easy read that focuses mostly on the ways in which a) harm to animals results in harm to women and b) kindness to animals helps women. Leaving the theoretical stuff to those with Philosophy PhDs or axes to grind, this book will be filled with concrete examples of how animal issues become women’s issues, letting the reader decide the why.

  3. I would buy them all – but I’d be turned off by the title of ‘Big Butts, Small Minds’. It reeks of the fatphobia some sectors of the vegan community espouse, which I do not, in any way, wish to support. I’d pick a more poignant title.

  4. I like them all. I think you could do Kill Time with your eyes closed. Do it!

  5. Three guesses which idea I voted for ;)

  6. These are all good ideas, but I think the third option, All The Females, will hit the greatest markets. Feminists are a key demographic to be targeted in the AR movement, and we need more literature, especially non-academic literature, on this topic to bring in a group of people who should be very sympathetic to the cause.

The feminist perspective–to recognize oppression that hides behind the wall of the status quo–can be quickly shifted from sexism to speciesism, and all the links they share.

  7. I love them all! But since we need to choose one I’d say Big Butts, Small Minds. But if you had time you should so do them all! Very good ideas!
