When Visitors Come

When I first saw the Oprah segment last week that featured an investigative report of a slaughterhouse, I wondered why Lisa Ling didn’t interview any of the slaughterhouse workers. Why didn’t Lisa Ling ask, “Is this the normal line speed?” Afterall, a report by Nebraska Appleseed on slaughterhouse worker safety found many workers asking to slow the line. One worker said:

“It would be good if the line remained the same speed as when visitors come”

Now, Grist is commenting on the piece in an article jokingly titled “Oprah discovers slaughterhouses more sanitary when sanitized.” In the Grist piece, they say: “it’s clear that this is a highly orchestrated visit with a Cargill-friendly moral.” Grist followed up with this statement and three links:

“The problem, as Tom Philpott and countless other Grist writers have amply documented, is that Cargill itself, and the food system it represents, is in some respects inherently anathema to sanitary, sustainable farming:”

In reality, the majority of animal agriculture is far from “sanitary”. See this for more:

  1. Yes… I wondered about line speed. And was also curious why the focus on only cow meat? Certainly more people consume chickens. And as we all know they are the most brutalized in numbers and in horrific “processing” procedures. I just don’t know what a Cargill representative AND Polland had to do with the “vegan” show. ? :/
