Veganism And Purity
An omnivore felt like “informing” us and left this comment recently:
“True veganism is absolutely impossible; a person cannot ‘not’ use any animal products.[...] Animal products are in our pharmaceuticals, hygiene products, cooking products, even photographic film. Even the lady in the video clip, she uses tooth paste, a derivative of animal byproducts, doesn’t she?”
Blah, blah, blah. This is the guy who makes fun of someone who orders a salad and fries. He, himself however, orders five Big Macs, fries, and a soda. He calls the guy who drives a Prius yet doesn’t recycle a ‘hypocrite.’ He, himself however, drives a Hummer.
News flash: we’re not all perfect and the world isn’t fair, but that doesn’t give us license to act like jerks. The fact that animal exploiters find so many sneaky and terrible ways to use and abuse animals doesn’t mean we shouldn’t reduce our animal product consumption. We can ALL stop eating animal products. And we can ALL stop using animals for clothing and cosmetics. That’s simple. We should ALL do it.
If you have a conscience, go vegan. Go as vegan as you can go. Do it now, for the animals, for the planet, for other people, and for yourself. Be as vegan as you can be. Even if you think to yourself, “I couldn’t live without cheese,” well, get that far at least. A cheese addiction isn’t a reason to keep eating cow FLESH!
Get real. Get honest.
The above commenter obviously hadn’t read this website much because otherwise he’d realize that we repeatedly acknowledge how impossible/difficult it is to be a 100% pure vegan in an omnivorous society. We’ve said:
- “We can’t control the world, but we can control our own actions. We all have choices and most of us can choose to go vegan. We can make that choice for ourselves right now.” (link)
- “Vegans seek to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.” [...] “When vegans have a choice in the matter, vegans don’t subjugate animals to serve human interests.” (link)
- “it is impossible to assure that everything you eat, everything you wear, every part of how you live is completely free of cruelty to animals.” [...] “No matter where you fall on that vegan line you aren’t perfect, because there is no such thing. And that imperfection is in the definition.” (link)
- “By doing something rather than nothing, I’m not being hypocritical, I’m being pro-active. Certainly, there are areas where I can improve, but we all start somewhere, don’t we? I’m sure there are things you could do better, too. Can you think of any?” (link)
There is NO good reason to treat animals the way our society does today. NONE.
Omnivores’ excuses are EMPTY.
