I would love to know more about the reasons behind people of color going vegetarian, & if/how that differs in any respects from white folks’ reasons–does the experience of being non-white in a racist society encourage sympathy for animals? Like this post says, “Niggas in Baghdad and Beantown get treated no different than Elsie the cow.”
Also, I know for statistical purposes oftentimes polls can’t say anything about Asians, b/c the numbers are too small. But I’d like to know how much company I’m in!
Yeah, I don’t know. I wonder.
I’m betting it’s a lot of the same reasons white folk go vegan - they care about animals, care about their own health, know other vegans, like to try new things, are attracted to the lifestyle, want to reduce consumption, care about the environment, cheaper food…
I also think the poll may not be entirely accurate. (But I think it’s probably pretty, darn accurate.)
And I wonder, too, how many people convert to vegetarianism after working in or visiting farms and slaughterhouses. What do you want to bet more people of color have those jobs?
