Vegan Bites: Snacks, Politics, And Rescue
Here’s a round-up of a variety of vegan-related articles and ideas around the web:

- Theory: Dan Cudahy answers, “What about the plants?” Simply put, he says, “Our moral obligations regarding plants, however, do not compare in kind to our direct moral obligations to vertebrates, whose sentience and conscious, intentional striving for life and survival is obvious to us. ” read the whole thing here >>
- Politics: “We recently looked at why the government and the press (outside of some bloggers and opinion columnists) have not labeled the murder of an abortion provider as “terrorism.” It’s important to remember, though, that this isn’t an isolated incident. The word terrorism is used by the FBI and Department of Justice only when it fits a certain political agenda.”The government has systematically labeled animal rights and environmental activists who have never harmed anyone as “the number one domestic terrorism threat.” Yet the term is not applied to individuals who have committed much more serious (and often violent) crimes either for personal gain or for right-wing motives.” Read the 30 Crimes the US Government Chooses to Not Label Terrorism

- PETA: Given Jill’s reaction in the comments to her post about PETA, I think she just might be realizing that any attack on PETA whatsoever fuels the pro-meat/anti-vegan people. She wound up closing comments because too many people were posting pro-steak comments. In my opinion, if you don’t like what PETA does, but you do like animals, it’s better to ignore PETA than provide a forum for animal hate.

- Anti-Compassion: Anti-vegan humor is anything but funny: “Fellow animals able to feel terror and pain every bit as much as you and I were trapped inside enormous sheds, while smoke joined the usual burning ammonia in their lungs, while they panicked, while they screamed out and flapped their wings as much as their cramped quarters and burdened bodies would allow, while they burned alive, trapped and with no hope of escape. And a propaganda artist who likes to set himself and his clients up as the level-headed ones, as the ones who represent the majority of Americans and consumers, thinks it’s funny. He’s just disappointed that they burned to a crisp inside a shed rather than on his grill. The panic, the horror, the terror, the pain–it’s all irrelevant.” Read more at CHANGE >>
- Animal Rescue: Mark Hawthorne lists some chicken rescue organizations. “There are a number of groups around the world that rescue chickens. If you can help one or more of these nonprofits, I know they’d appreciate it.”
