  • E. coli O157:H7, the strain that nearly took Stephanie Smith’s life, is a relatively new pathogen. First discovered in 1982, its emergence and spread has been blamed on three factors: the beef industry’s transition to factory farms, the routine mass feeding of antibiotics to cattle, and the stress associated with trucking these animals as many as a thousand miles to slaughter.” read more >>
  • “PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk has asked President Obama to declare a ‘National Wildlife Amnesty Day’ in honor of the 95 percent of us who prefer to shoot wildlife with cameras, not guns.” See the awful hunting picture here >>
  • “I believe as individuals we should spent less time watching, and more time doing.” read more from Peter Young here >>
  • “In and of itself, it’s not surprising that the sounds animals make are not just noise, or a reflection of the state an animal’s in (scared, happy and so on). But the subtlety of the calls — the full amount of meaning they contain — is only now being appreciated.” read more about animal communication >>
  • “Allowing enough room for animals to turn around and extend their limbs is not onerous government regulation, but rather ensuring their reasonable treatment.” more animal welfare laws >>
  • “‘The big surprise when we introduced the new vegetarian menus was the number of nonvegetarians who signed up to receive the meals,’ said Elston Collins of Good Measure Mealsmore >>
  • Alicia Silverstone has a new site called TheKindLife.com. But so far, nothing’s there. I’m curious.
