Vegan Bites: MRSA, Old Spice, Cigarettes & Water

Just another roundup of tidbits from across the vegan Web.

News, cookbooks, and more…

Take a look!

“Judging by the number of new vegetarian cookbooks, this is a good time to be interested in a plant-based diet. Five new cookbooks, some totally vegan and some vegetarian, are out or due out in the next few weeks.” Read more: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/04/26/2826023/cookbooks-serve-up-a-bounty-of.html#ixzz1Kq0ZKtmL

“According to the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, half of the meat and poultry sold in U.S. supermarkets may be tainted with the deadly pathogen staphylococcus aureus. The study tested 136 samples of beef, chicken, pork, and turkey in five cities. Half of the bacteria were resistant to antibiotics. One organism, MRSA, is a leading cause of fatal infections in schools and hospitals.” link >>

“Statistically, vegans have lower blood pressures and less hypertension than meat-eaters and possibly even compared to vegetarians who eat dairy foods and eggs. And with 100 percent of their calories coming from plant foods, their diets are automatically lower in compounds that raise heart disease risk. Vegans have lower levels of blood cholesterol, too.” Continue reading: Preventing heart disease with a vegan diet – National vegan | Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/vegan-in-national/preventing-heart-disease-with-a-vegan-diet#ixzz1Kq1dnJcU

  1. Isn’t this why people cook their meat? Don’t people get sick from improperly washed or cooked vegtables? Isn’t everything in the entire world covered in bacteria including trillions living on your own body? This seems like baseless fear mongering to me.

  2. Researchers at the University of Florida have identified the 10 riskiest combinations of foods and pathogens. Nine of them are meat, eggs or dairy and one is “complex food” that consists of multiple ingredients (http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110428/ARTICLES/110429513#)

As the earlier poster said, most food is covered in bacteria before we wash it. But it seems that the ones that are especially harmful or deadly are associated with animal products. The ten they identified are responsible for nearly 3.9 million illnesses, 30,000 hospitalizations, and 765 deaths per year in the U.S.

The feed given to livestock is not washed before they eat it, so they ingest and store in their bodies all the contaminants they eat. For example, over 75% of the pesticide residues in the human diet are found in animal products. You can wash these contaminats off lettuce or broccoli. I don’t know any way of getting them out of animal tissues before you eat them.

  3. Although these 3D images can look incredible on a TV screen
or wall projection, the technology now exists
to bring such 3D graphics to the next level. Just dial
“FLY-555-0100″ on your own cell as well as a Police
Chopper will be right in front folks, enter it
and fly away. ‘ The video game is expected to come out for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in North America sometime during the spring period of 2013.
