Vegan Bites: Fishing, Race, Puppy Mills, Cookbooks, And Clothes

Hot off the presses, recent vegan news:

  • Vegan quote: “the appalling habit we humans have of hiding sharp things in food and offering it to animals. We call it ‘fishing’ and convince ourselves that because we can trick animals into hurting themselves, we should.” from Bizarro.
  • Howard Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers is vegan and has a new story out about her in New York Magazine. “[S]he’s lost sixty pounds in six months” – wow!
  • “Don Imus has also been vegan for years” reports vegan.com. It doesn’t make me feel any better about him given his racist statements, but at least he’s not hurting animals, too.
  • I’m doing a series about anti-racist vegan activism on my personal blog. First, there was the reading list, then part 1 and part 2. More to come.
  • Cafe VegNews makes a meal that makes me salivate. This looks sooooo good to me. It’s exactly my kind of food. (Now why’d they have to ruin it by posting feet pix?)
  • Coming up in June: Let Live Conference, an animal rights conference in Portland
  • Worth a read: Wayne Pacelle on puppy mills.
  • Vegan cookbooks get a positive mention in the NY Times. Go leave a comment!
  • Another vegan quote: “Given their symbiotic, holistic, and interlocking relationship, it is imperative that we no longer speak of human liberation, animal liberation, or earth liberation as if they were independent struggles; rather, we need to speak of total liberation. Theoretically, we must view these liberation movements in relation to one another and identify commonalities of oppression, such as stem from hierarchy and capitalism. Politically, we need to form alliances against common oppressors, across class, racial, gender, and national boundaries, as we link democracy to ecology and social justice to animal rights.” Dr. Steven Best via Animal Person
  • Animal welfare attempt to give hens more room in cages sparks idiocy from egg industry: “It would be tremendously expensive.” Oh noes! Factory farmers might have to lose a bit of profit by making life slightly more bearable for hens. How about they just change professions instead?
  • Sexy vegan dresses from Swanky Vegan.
