Turkey Mercy: Thanksgiving Traditions

Turkey Mercy: Thanksgiving Traditions

Vegan Soapbox has featured snippets that encourage Americans to give mercy to turkeys. Today is the last day of that series because it’s Thanksgiving Day. Our final snippet comes from the CIA Club.

The CIA Club President sent out an email. From it:

“Because traditions die hard, it may seem almost unpatriotic to question the death-of-a-turkey tradition, but many traditions, including slavery, women as property, and gladiator entertainment, also died hard.  What we really should be thankful for is everything opposite of what the dead turkey symbolizes:  Compassion and kindness and efforts to make our environment cleaner and safer.  To read and see for yourself that the making of a turkey for food contradicts these things, click HERE to read a Los Angeles Times article and HERE to watch a video.

You may be thinking, ‘If I watch a video, I won’t be able to eat the turkey.’ There’s no hidden agenda here; that’s the point. Burying one’s head in the sand, claiming ignorance to be bliss, will only perpetuate a problem that affects all of us. The late Gretchen Wyler so eloquently reminded us to face the truth courageously when she said, ‘We must endure with our eyes what [animals] must endure with their bodies.’”

“The good news is that if you decide to be a revolutionary for creating compassionate traditions, you certainly do not have to go hungry this Thanksgiving.  Consider some of the following options: Adopt a Turkey Through Animal Acres and/or Through Farm Sanctuary.”
