Emily Deschanel: "Saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics."

A Salon article about vegan pregnancies commented “A woman’s body — and what she puts into it — are generally regarded as fair game for public speculation. Throw in a fetus and it’s open season.”

Ain’t that the truth?

The article begins:

In the August issue of the Ladies’ Home Journal, “Bones” star Emily Deschanel talks about staying on the vegan path even as she prepares for motherhood, explaining, “Saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics.”

And then it goes on to comment on the pregnancies of veg celebrities Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone. Commenters had a field day with it, making absurd and dishonest criticisms of veganism and vegans.

The mainstream experts on nutrition – the American Dietetic Association – says this:

“An evidence-based review showed that vegetarian diets [including vegan diets] can be nutritionally adequate in pregnancy and result in positive maternal and infant health outcomes.”

You can read the article at http://www.eatright.org/About/Content.aspx?id=8357. In the full version, the ADA includes some recommendations for ALL vegetarians and vegans so check it out!

She talks about how she went vegan 16 years ago and has learned so much in the time that she’s been vegan. Her passion is clearly evident. She cares about animals and the environment a great deal.

Some quotes:

“I went vegan after watching a documentary”

“They’re considered commodities. I mean, they’re babies…”

“[the animal] has a soul”

“we all know that our dogs and our cats are very different from one another but people don’t think about how each of these animals that we call dinner have these same kinds of personalities”

Last Thursday’s episode of Bones featured video from factory farms.

The show, a murder mystery series, was about the murder of a chicken farmer. But a side story involved the artist Angela‘s desire to sponsor a rescued piglet. She wanted to raise enough money to care for this one piglet… and she found supporters in unusual places: bacon-lovers and health-motivated vegetarians.

Now, FOX is asking viewers to help name the piglet.

The Bones website asks people to email their piglet name suggestions to angelaspiglet@gmail.com.

The footage, requested by Emily Deschanel, will educate thousands of mainstream viewers about the cruel conditions animals are forced to endure on factory farms.

Tonight’s episode of the hit FOX television show “Bones” (airing at 8pm/7 Central), starring vegan actress and Farm Sanctuary supporter Emily Deschanel, will prominently feature factory farming footage secured by Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, as part of a plot-line surrounding a murder that takes place at a chicken farm.

The footage, which was requested by Emily Deschanel, will educate thousands of mainstream viewers about the cruel conditions animals are forced to endure on factory farms. The episode also features a character who rescues a pig and asks her coworkers for donations so that she can sponsor her at a sanctuary.

To further raise awareness of the horrors of factory farming, FOX is featuring a special message from Deschanel on their website (fox.com/bones/) urging people to support Farm Sanctuary by sponsoring an animal in need.

To learn more about “adopting” one of Farm Sanctuary’s rescued animals, please visit farmsanctuary.org.
