The graph below illustrates the sad fact that farmed animals are just babies when they’re slaughtered.
Farmed animals live short lives that are literally filled with suffering. It’s cruel, it’s wasteful, and it’s wrong to eat these babies.
Animal advocate and graph co-creator, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau says:
“The unappetizing process of turning living animals into butchered body parts begins at birth and ends in youth – whatever they’re raised for and however they’re raised. Relative to their natural life span, most of the animals are slaughtered when they’re still babies, as illustrated in the graphic. For those who can’t see the graph here are some examples:
The average age at which pigs are slaughtered is 6-8 months but their natural life span is about 10-12 years. Turkeys are killed at just 4-5 months of age in animal agribusiness but wild ones can live up to 15 years. Dairy cows are usually killed when they’re about 4 years old but they could easily live 15-20 years if given the chance. Beef cattle could live just as long but are salughtered at just 18 months. Chickens raised for meat are killed at merely 5-7 weeks of age but like turkeys could live much longer, up to 8 years. The list goes on and on.
