Urge Your New York City Council Member to Support Humane Education
In 1947, New York’s State Legislature enacted a law requiring instruction in “the humane treatment and protection of animals.” Since then, this law has gone largely unnoticed by teachers and unenforced by the Department of Education. Thankfully, New York City Council Member Tony Avella has introduced a resolution that would help ensure that all New York City students experience the benefits of humane education in the classroom.

Resolution 497 would urge the New York City Department of Education to issue a memorandum to all New York City schools, notifying them of the humane education mandate and the requirement that all elementary school principles direct their teachers to act accordingly. Your help is needed to ensure the passage of this important resolution.

What you can do:

To date, 34 members of the New York City Council have signed on as cosponsors of this resolution. If your Council Member is among them, please thank him or her for supporting humane education in New York City schools. If your Council Member has not yet signed on, politely urge him or her to support this important resolution that will help prepare students to become caring and responsible members of society.

To find out who your Council Member is, contact the League of Humane Voters – New York City (LOHV-NYC) at 212-889-0303 during normal business hours, or visit www.humanenyc.org.
