Successful Dairy Demonstration

Successful Dairy Demonstration

NYC Animal Rights held a very successful demonstration recently. NYC Animal Rights held signs and handed out any-dairy literature to counteract a dairy marketing scheme that ran on Craigslist and tours with a milk-mobile.

The organizer, Santos, said:

“[T]he ‘Milk Mustache Campaign’ couldn’t handle the truth and left after only an hour and half after they set up their three tents. Not a single person posed for their ads, they never got to spin the prize wheel or make a single milk shake. Yes we were that good.”

The photos show activists holding signs that read:

  • “When you drink cow milk, you tear mother from child and sentence them both to death.”
  • “Don’t be a sucker. Cow milk is for calves.”
  • “Cow milk comes from grieving mothers.”

Now, that sounds like effective animal advocacy.

On a personal note, I attended one demonstration with this advocacy group when I lived in NYC. I’m no expert, but I think I learned a few things from observation:

  • Strong Leadership: The success of this group is largely due to the leader, Santos. He’s extremely passionate and he doesn’t give up when things don’t go his way.
  • Preparation: He’s prepared. He comes with signs, he knows the law, he brings cameras, etc.
  • Real: He’s not perfect.  None of us are perfect. Sometimes we say the wrong things. Sometimes we have miscommunication. Sometimes things don’t work out.
  • Flexibility: I’m certain he’s open to constructive criticism. He’s not an inflexible person who is unwilling to experiment with new methods and test out new theories. I’ve watched his group over the last year and they’ve done a wide variety of activities.

I have concluded, from watching him and others, that if a passionate person wants to make a difference, they can. We each our own strengths and weaknesses, but we can all do something to help animals, be it by organizing a protest, by encouraging others to organize demonstrations, by leafletting, by blogging, by having honest conversations, or by simply being vegan.

One Response to Successful Dairy Demonstration

  1. I find it so funny when people try to justify that some humans choose to drink cows milk.

If you drink cows milk you are normal and healthy. If you are a grown up drinking human mothers milk you have a fetish and is not considered normal.

I also get really provoked when they say the cows go to the stall to get milked freely. We’ve done the same to humans and still do it. Make them do things that they might not want to do, but after time they just accept it.
