Scientist Fired For Opposing Animal Cruelty

“A former scientist at an animal testing facility in Nevada where 32 research monkeys were accidentally killed in May claims in a federal lawsuit he was fired partly because he opposed ‘cruel and inhumane mistreatment’ of animals there.” (source)

How were the monkeys “accidentally” killed? Here’s how:

“[M]onkeys were literally cooked to death by a heating system failure, as a whistleblower alleges, shows that the facility did not even have a simple alarm system in place to alert staff to the malfunction,”(source)

I have a home alarm system that would probably prevent this kind of thing. It’s just a simple heat detector. Mine is from a security company and I pay a modest monthly fee. It’s OUTRAGEOUS that an expensive laboratory wouldn’t have such a simple security system in place. The heat detector is not a financial burden; it’s a prudent, responsible thing to do, particularly when caring for animals.

  1. Those poor animals. This makes me so sad.

  2. The fact that the scientist was fired shows that research facilities really don’t care about animal welfare at all (not that we didn’t already know that). I hope this makes headlines as the federal lawsuit progresses, because his speaking out about why he was fired lets people know that there are people within the scientific community who do care about the animals.
