Reasons To Be Vegetarian

I’ve wanted to make this video for a while now, as I’m really enthusiastic about vegetarianism. I’m just stating my own opinions here though, and I know some of you will disagree with the points I make, which is fine.

Also, I’m sorry if I sound patronising [Silly, Brits with their Ss instead of Zs!] at all in this video. I didn’t mean to, and I DON’T think I’m better than anyone who eats meat, I just choose not to eat it for my own personal moral reasons.

I hope this video at least gets people thinking about the topic though, and generates some discussion. Please feel free to leave comments with your thoughts on vegetarianism.

  1. He’s taking on a non-threatening character, and I don’t presume to judge the efficacy of another vegetarian’s activism. I salute him for his enthusiasm and action.

But this notion of ‘personal moral reasons’ upsets me. Of course, only contentious moral issues seem to be good candidates for this liberal moral reasoning. It serves to justify the moral tyranny of the majority, and I wish everyone (but especially vegetarians) would drop it.

  2. I think you’re right, Jay.
However, I can’t begrudge anyone for using a method they know or feel is more effective and/or less personally destructive. The sad fact is that, since our ethics are in the minority, we are vulnerable. I get hate mail on a fairly regular basis and if you’ve seen “I Am Animal” you know many vocal animal advocates receive hate mail. At times, I’ve felt physically threatened simply because people don’t like being told what they’re doing is wrong. So… couching our promotion of veganism in “personal choice” type language is a form of self-protection. And I can’t get on anyone’s case for looking out for their own safety.
