Reminder, November 1st is the day to tell your vegan story! Twitter (#vegan), blog, go on forums, write online essays and articles. Youtube or podcast “your VEGAN story”.
Here is my story, the first video draft:
Are you going to tell your story? How are you going to do it? In a video or blog post?
Elaine – great story! Illustrates how much intensive thought and consideration your process took. Certainly not an impulsive, “emotion” based decision, as some folks seem to think veganism is…
Just curious though – what at 13 made you connect eggs and dairy as unacceptable? It took me 45+ years as a meat-eater and 8 years as a vegetarian to figure it out – even with the net! What happened that made you connect the exploitation of cow’s milk and eggs to ethics – twenty years ago?
Thanks for all you do!

It was partially just obvious. Animals should not be forced to live, breed, and die for our food or clothing or entertainment… I had heard the PETA slogan and I agreed with it, animals are not ours…
But also, someone recommended that I read Diet For A New America. It came out when I was 11 or 12. I read it and it helped me feel confident that I wouldn’t become malnourished without dairy. It helped inspire me to make the leap. And even if I didn’t stay with veganism long-term I knew it was a good moral and nutritional choice.
“It was partially just obvious.” Yes, I suppose it probably is just a matter of common sense – But that’s why I feel so bad! Just never knew cows had to be pregnant for milk… or that they caged chickens. Goes to show that if you’re out of the loop and aren’t looking (or don’t know biology 101) – a whole bunch of ugly secrets go unseen and unquestioned.
Thanks for the additional info!
