No More Concentration Camps For Animals!
The Las Vegas Weekly is again reporting dramatic changes for MY stomping grounds, Sin City.
Steve Wynn is making even more waves about factory farming and his conversion to veganism, becoming a vegangelist.
In an interview, Wynn said:
“I don’t want any more concentration camps for animals that are cruelly treated, force fed to fatten themselves up for our consumption.”
“I’ve become an animal rights activist.”
He’s also made the following changes:
- converted the staff cafeteria over with a vegan-based menu
- given every one of his executives, chefs and employees a book and a DVD on the subject of veganism
- changed his will to benefit animals
Now, we don’t know where the money’s going and how much good it will actually do for animals yet, but this is huge news in the Vegas vegan community!
Speaking of the Vegas vegan community, I’ll take a moment to highlight Vegas Veg, the group with which I work.
So far, we’ve made tremendous strides to effect positive, animal-friendly change in the Vegas valley. For example, we’ve done these things:
- We’ve had over 250 “meetups“! Usually we have 2 or 3 food events per month, exposing newbie vegans & vegetarians to local vegan fare and helping vegans make vegan friends, which will help keep them vegan!
- We’ve handed out over 10,000 vegan educational pamphlets! That means we’ve probably helped create hundreds of vegans. (You can see the pamphlets here >>)
- We put up 9 billboards that were viewed over 10 million times! (Thanks to help from MFA!)
- We raised over $400 for victims of the Haiti earthquake with a vegan bake sale.
- We’ve shown Earthlings and inspired nonvegans to go vegan and vegans to get active. (If you haven’t seen it, please watch it. It’s online free here: http://www.earthlings.com/earthlings/video-full.php ) And we’ve helped promote vegan-themed films when other groups show them.
- We’ve compiled an online list of Vegas restaurants that are vegan-friendly.
And we’re not done. With this wave of curiosity and embrace of veganism pouring out from places like the Wynn hotel and casino, the Vegas vegan community is just getting warmed up!
