Melamine In Meat?
I just read a bit of scary news:
“The Department of Agriculture’s National Meat Inspection Services (NMIS) on Tuesday named four Chinese brands of processed meat products that are being tested for possible melamine contamination.
“NMIS executive director Jane Bacayo said they have submitted samples of Ma Ling Luncheon Meat, Gulong Pork Luncheon Meat, Great Wall corned beef and another brand called Narcisos, to private laboratories for melamine contamination tests.” (source)
Luckily, it’s only scary for omnivores. We vegans shouldn’t have to worry about this one.

What about the Asian vegan meat altenatives such as Vegefarm products?? Any risk there?
I don’t know of any risk. Of course, contamination is certainly possible. Any product could be contaminated. Yet another reason to minimize consumption of pre-packaged foods and try to stick with fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, etc.
Actually almost all meat has some contaminant because of pesticides, air pollution, water pollution etc.
Mad cow diseases among american cattle, for example, is not talked about much and is why some people don’t understand why Koreans and Japanese kick up a storm about American beef shipments. The media try to portray it as protectionism but then why are there no such protests about increasing, record shipments of beef from Australia?
Not all Chinese fooddstuffs are contamination free but you can ignore the other foodstuffs from other countries at your own perils.
