Making That Sandwich At Home
I admit I’m addicted to Subway veggie sandwiches. I started getting them mainly when on the road but now I seek them out nearer home. I rather like to sit in the restaurant, looking around me and indulging in a foot-long veggie (no cheese, no dressing, no mayo), knowing that what I am eating has fewer calories and fat and more fiber than those meat-laden six-inchers others are having.
There are no sneaky complicated ingredients in this sandwich so I have started to make them at home. Sometimes I use bread similar to Subway’s wheat, other times I will go for sliced bread or tortillas. However it is packaged I find it just delicious and satisfying. An added benefit is that I can use organic vegetables and better lettuce.

My particular blend of ingredients is:
lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, bell pepper, olives, banana peppers, salt and pepper
I don’t use any dressing so sometimes it can get messy. But I can wrap it in napkins to reduce the drips.
This has to be the most ridiculously easy knock-off fast food item. Do you take a tip from a sandwich joint too? Or is that too crass? And if you start there, do you add extras?

I do knock-off kebabs (souvlaki – not on a skewer) at home! YUM!
I buy the felafals and the bread and the hummus so really I’m almost not making it myself…
