IPhone Apps For Vegans
The iPhone is becoming a vegan’s best friend. Just check out all the applications available to help vegan iphone owners on the go…
iPhone Apps for Vegans
- Veggie Passport: Thanks to VEGdaily, I learned of the iPhone equivalent of the “Vegan Passport,” a collection of translations for the veg*n traveler. For example, it will tell you how to say “I am a vegetarian” in multiple languages. Get the Veggie Passport here >>
- Be Nice To Bunnies: Thanks to ecorazzi, I learned of PETA’s new iphone app, a guide to ” cruelty-free” products. Companies and products that are vegan are also noted. Get Be Nice To Bunnies here >>
- iLocate: This is another vegan restaurant finder. You can view through a list or by a map. Get iLocate here >>
- Food Additives: With this application, you can look up label ingredients to find out if they’re vegan or not. Also helpful: it lists the potential health risks of particular additives. Get Food Additives here >>
- VegOut: Thanks to VegetarianWoman, I learned about these last three apps. With VegOut you can find a vegetarian, vegan or veg-friendly restaurant when traveling. You can even find restaurants using GPS. Get VegOut here >>
- Vegetarian SmartList: This app takes most of the guesswork out of label-reading. Of course, if you don’t have an iphone, just use this rule: If you have to look it up, put it down. Hard-to-pronounce words are rarely worth eating. Get Vegetarian SmartList here >>
- Vegan Xpress: With this app, you’ll get a listing of restaurants in the area that offer a vegan option. Get Vegan Xpress here >>
*Please note: I don’t have any room left on my iphone so I couldn’t test these out myself, sorry! If you have experience with these applications, please leave a comment below and share! Update: I tested some apps. My reviews are below in the comments section.

Bummer! I was hoping you could find our next restaurant with your iPhone.
Well, I have happycow.net bookmarked and that’s been good enough so far… but, I guess just for you I’ll clear out some pictures to make room for one or two of these apps.
I don’t travel much (and when I do I’m happy to just browse around the web), so I just have BNB and Vegan Xpress. Both are excellent ideas and have pretty nice UIs, though they could be more complete. BNB in particular could use parent company info (especially since the PETA buyer’s guide has that info), while Vegan Xpress is missing quite a lot of wines that I have personally verified as vegan. I suppose the latter app is also pretty USA-centric, for what that’s worth.
Still, they’re definitely worth five bucks and I expect they’ll only get better with future updates.
OK, so I downloaded VeganXpress and iLocate Vegan and both are very cool.
The first one is a list of vegan options from fast food, supermarket food, beer, and wine. This is great for new vegans or for vegans traveling who aren’t familiar with the chain restaurants in the area.
The latter uses the iphone maps app to plug in vegan-friendly restaurants near your location and it gives you directions to them. VERY cool and useful. But it’s limited. It doesn’t give reviews, level of vegan-friendliness, or even food type.
I tried the Leaping Bunny one, Cruelty Free ( http://www.itunes.com/apps/cruelty-free ) before and I wasn’t all that impressed because I don’t just want products that weren’t tested on animals, I want products that don’t contain animals. But it IS useful for people who are solely interested in products free of animal testing.
The Be Nice To Bunnies app is good because it tells you what is vegan (big, green V) and what is not (V with a line through it). But it’d be nice if it were a little more detailed. For example, under soaps it lists LUSH and has the V with a line through it. But many LUSH soaps are vegan. So… unless the entire line is vegan, BNB says it’s not vegan.
What’s nice is that even though all this info is available simply by using the web browser on the iphone, the apps make it faster and simpler, as well as WAY cooler to show your nonvegan friends.
Dear friends,
We’re trying to organize and official meat free Monday in Taiwan with government support. Can you please help us by signing and spreading this petition:

Thank you all

Food Additives is so tiresome to use.
I would recommend FoodStuffs instead (http://itunes.com/apps/foodstuffs).
Where Food Additives is a medical/science app, FoodStuffs is more lifestyle oriented. And the translations on Food Additives are made by some kind of horrible translation engine, which makes it unusable in other languages.
@Sandra.
I tried FoodStuffs and your right. It’s a lot more ‘friendly’ to use. Thanx for the tip
I haven’t used all the apps lited here but the VeganXpress app is really useful and easy to use. I definitely recommend it. I know this post was from a year ago but the app is still being updated so I wanted to add my feedback.
I actually listed it in my Top 8 Green iPhone Apps post on my blog.
Here’s the link so you can check it out: http://greenergreener.com/top-8-green-iphone-apps/
Wish there were apps for blackberry phones
