If The Obamas Don’t Go Vegan, Maybe Their Puppy Will

The blogosphere is abuzz with talk about the new Obama puppy. People are talking about what breed is most suitable and whether or not they should adopt a shelter dog.

Well, that decision is already made, both Barack and Michelle Obama have stated they will be adopting a shelter dog. So good news on the animal front – no puppymill or breeder promotion from our new presidential family! (Hopefully the rest of the country will take the hint and adopt instead of buying dogs from pet stores and breeders.)

Another topic of conversation is how to help the new family member stay green. Some bloggers recommend sustainable dog houses and others talk about converting dog poop to electricity. Those are neat ideas, but you know what would truly be green?

Feeding the dog vegetarian or vegan dogfood would be an animal-friendly and an environmentally-friendly thing to do. There are plenty of veg dogfoods available and one is sure to suit the presidential pooch. Since Americans need to curb our meat consumption in order to prevent climate change, and since dogs don’t *need* meat, feeding dogs a veg dogfood is a great, easy way to reduce meat consumption. Even feeding veg dogfood only for half the meals will do some good.

Here are some veg dogfood options:

  • Organic Vegan Dog Food By PetGuard
  • Evolution “Gourmet EntrĂ©e” Vegan Dog Food
  • Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula
  • Natural Life Vegetarian Formula
  • Breeder’s Choice AvoDerm Vegetarian Dog Food
  • Three Dog Bakery Adult Vegetarian Formula
  • Wenaewe Vegetarian
  • Wysong Vegetarian
  • Ami Dog Vegan Dog Food

Or they could make their own. PETA has an article about dog food. Or take a look at this.

Personally, I feed my dogs veg dogfood. I’ve fed them a variety of brands and they’ve never complained. I also feed them tofu, lentils, cooked potatoes, and rice on occasion to give them some variety.

PS – I personally don’t recommend feeding cats veg*n food, but feel free to discuss that topic in the comments below.

  1. My cat has been vegan for 12 years and has always had great vet check ups/blood work, etc. I know several other people with vegan cats and all have done great. It is a hot topic but, like my dog pal, I’m convinced both cats and dogs can thrive on a properly prepared vegan diet.

    Great article above, btw. :)

  2. That’s good to know. I’ve heard of many cats who are vegan and are fine, but for now I’m going to err on the side of caution. Until the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights or my own veterinarian approves or recommends vegan catfood, I’m going to keep the cats on nonvegan catfood. The dogs, however, are completely fine on a primarily vegan diet.
