FYI, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a seemingly anti-intellectual, anti-animal, anti-peace organization, launched a new website: http://www.animalrightsextremism.org/ wherein they claim:
“Among those who oppose the humane [sic] use of animals in research is a fringe element that uses criminal [sic] activity to forward their cause. Animal rights extremists use vandalism, harassment campaigns, arson, and violent [sic] assault against researchers and associated people or entities as an end to achieve their means. These groups pose a real threat to medical progress and the scientists who dedicate their lives to improving the lives of others.”
“FASEB affirms that animal models are crucial [sic] for our understanding and treatment of human disease, and strongly believes that scientists deserve a safe research environment where they can continue to improve the health of all people. We helped pass the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act [aka the AETA] which provides additional law enforcement tools and protections for research entities targeted by animal rights extremists.” (source)

here’s another video that shows very clearly that animal testing is bad science: http://www.animal-tv.org/html/english/movie_good_bad_science.html
Great post!
Here’s more ammo:
Less than 2% of human illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never are.
At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in lab animals. They are allowed because it is admitted that animal tests are not relevant.
When asked if they agreed that animal experimentation can be misleading because of anatomical and physiological differences between animals and humans, 88% of doctors agreed.
Rats are 37% effective in identifying what causes cancer in humans. Flipping a coin would be more accurate.
According to animal tests lemon juice is deadly poison, but arsenic, hemlock and botulin are safe.
40% of patients suffer side effects as a result of prescription treatment.
Over 200, 000 medicines have been released most of which are now withdrawn. According to the World Health Organisation, 240 medicines are “essential”.
Thousands of drugs passed safe in animals have been withdrawn or banned due to their effect on human health.
Aspirin fails animal tests, as do digitalis (heart drug), cancer treatments, insulin (causes animal birth defects), penicillin and other safe medicines. They would be banned if results from animal experimentation were accurate.
When the producers of thalidomide were taken to court, they were aquitted after numerous experts agreed animal tests could not be relied on for human medicine.
At least 450 methods exist with which we can replace animal experiments.
Morphine puts humans asleep but excites cats.
95% of drugs passed by animal tests are immediately disgarded as useless or dangerous to humans.
One is six patients in hospital are there because the drug they have taken had been passed safe for us on humans after animal tests.
Worldwide, at least 22 animals die every second in labs. In the UK one animal dies every five seconds.
The contraceptive pill causes blood clots in humans but it had the opposite effect in dogs.
We use aspirin for aches and pains. It causes birth defects mice, rabbits and rats.
Researchers refused to believe that benzene could cause cancer in humans because it failed to in animal tests.
Dogs failed to predict heart problems caused by the cardiovascular drugs encainide and flecainide, which led to an estimated 3, 000 deaths in the USA.
Heart by pass surgery was put on hold for years because it didn’t work on dogs.
If we had relied on animal tests we would still believe that humans don’t need vitamin C, that smoking doesn’t cause cancer and alcohol doesn’t cause liver damage.
It was denied for decades that asbestos caused disease in humans because it didn’t in animals.
Polio researchers were mislead for years about how we catch the disease because they had experimented on monkeys.
As one researcher points out, “the ultimate dilemma with any animal model of human disease is that it can never reflect the human situation with complete accuracy.”
Eccentric Vegan, great post! Matt & vegangrrrl, great additions of info!
I often come across vegans, very intelligent, thoughtful ones, who consider the argument that animal testing is to help humans a valid one, but that there can be high-tech models and other alternatives to live animal testing. I know they just haven’t learned about the raw vegan diet yet, a position I was once in. But the answer is now a simple, “It isn’t necessary AT ALL.”
Animal testing, and in fact the entire “Church of Modern Medicine” is 100% unnecessary and actually destructive.
The phrase “Church of Modern Medicine” was used in the amazing book “Confessions of a Medical Heretic” by the late Robert S. Mendelsohn, MD. He writes “In 1976 in Bogota, Columbia, there was a 52-day period in which doctors disappeared altogether except for emergency care.” The death rate went down 35%. He also writes that in 1973 in Israel, when doctors reduced their daily patient contact from 65,000 to 7,000 for a month, according to the Jerusalem Burial Society, the death rate dropped by 50%! There had not been such a profound decrease in mortality since the last doctors’ strike 20 years before!
There are 3 categories that modern medicine is used for: illness, trauma (a sudden injury), & genetic defects (Down’s Syndrome, born without limbs, etc.). Illness & genetic defects are completely preventable with a raw vegan diet.
Trauma is almost always the result of humans doing something they aren’t naturally meant to do–either through stupidity or technology (for example, cars–man was never meant to travel at speeds of 70, 60, 50, 40, etc. miles per hour). And legitimate trauma injuries can be treated with plants (aloe vera is a well-known example).
As a side note, many times I have heard anti-vivisection folks quote an animal-torturing study to support their own argument. After careful analysis, I have concluded that this should be avoided at all costs. Everything we do is about informing non-animal-advocates about issues. If we use an animal study to prove our case that animals shouldn’t be used in studies, we have just told any listener that they ARE necessary because we couldn’t make our anti-vivisection case without it.
I wish I had more space to expand on the logic behind everything I’ve said, as I know some pieces may sound crazy (like saying cars shouldn’t exist).
Everyone keep up their good work advocating for animals!
