HSUS On Cage-Free Eggs

HSUS On Cage-Free Eggs

From the Humane Society of the United States:

* Cage-free farms typically buy their hens from the same hatcheries that supply battery-cage farms. These hatcheries kill the male chicks upon hatching—more than 200 million each year in the United States alone.
* Most cage-free hens have part of their beaks burned off, a painful mutilation.
* Hens are typically slaughtered at less than two years old, far less than half their normal lifespan. They are often transported long distances to slaughter plants with no food or water. [...]

So, while cage-free does not mean cruelty-free, cage-free hens generally have better lives than those confined in battery cages. The ability to lay their eggs in nests, walk and spread their wings are tangible benefits that shouldn’t be underestimated.

  1. Meh! That’s one of the reasons (besides Wayne Pacelle making $200,000+ a year) that I can’t stand HSUS. They paraded Prop 2 out as this great accomplishment to get donation funds when they fully know that it was completely void of actually helping the animals.

  2. Some people went vegan because of Prop 2. Never before did they know about factory farming and all the cruelty in animal agriculture, but during the campaign, they learned.

Say what you will about the HSUS, but you can’t accurately claim that Prop 2 didn’t accomplish something. It did.

  3. Highly recommend reading:

“Moving Beyond ‘Yes on Prop 2′”
    http://www.veganideal.org/content/moving-beyond-yes-prop-2

    Excerpt:
“Rather than challenging speciesism and human supremacy, campaigns like Prop. 2 funnel millions of dollars into collaborating with the oppressive system that exploits other animals. These campaigns operate on an agenda that assumes other animals exist for humans use.”

  4. The blog post above does nothing more than
    a) point out how cruel animal agriculture is and
    b) provide vegan recipes.

Your rants about Prop 2 and $200k salaries are misplaced and don’t belong here.

  5. Regarding your “Some people went vegan because of Prop 2″ comment. That very well may be the case, but how many other people now think that their eggs come from some beautiful farm where the chickens are happily roaming free? Most assume they did their part, they voted for Prop 2. If the above comments are the HSUS stance on cage free, why don’t they use part of that $131 MILLION in donations to work towards the elimination of the egg industry in it’s entirety? That would be far too controversial and I’m betting Wolfgang Puck wouldn’t sponsor their charity dinners then.

  6. Kevin,
Who cares? I don’t control the HSUS and neither do you.
If you think there’s a better way to advocate for animals, THEN DO IT.
Stop trying to change other advocates and start trying to change the world.

  7. HSUS, despite claiming to not support animal rights, holds great power over the animal rights movement through their money influence and networking connections. Countering their ideological hegemony is critical to getting our house in order and advancing the goal of liberation for other animals.

Anyone who has doubts about the dominance of HSUS, read Steve Best’s “The Iron Cage of Movement Bureaucracy”: http://www.drstevebest.org/Essays/TheIronCage.htm

  8. Please confine comments on this post to these two subjects:
    - the inherent cruelty of animal agriculture
    - vegan recipes

All other comments will be removed.

If you’re interested in contributing to the Soapbox with your own pro-vegan article (in which you criticize the HSUS if you want), please do so. But don’t hijack this article’s message.
