Sadly, I think a lot of people who are pro-animal rights focus mainly on the more obvious forms of abuse, such as factory farming and vivisection. Horse racing, greyhound racing, bull fighting, rodeos - although the animals don’t always die, they’re treated horribly, and when they become useless they are usually put to sleep.

Yeah, a lot of people focus on the things they know and see everyday. If you’re an average person, you probably aren’t involved in horse racing. It’s a bit of a class issue, like fur coats, veal, foie gras, etc.
Nonetheless, it deserves discussion. It’s a brutal “sport.”
It should have nothing to do with usual abuse, or non-abuse for that matter. I loathe horse racing, but I recognize that the vast amount of horses on the track are not murdered before, during, or after the races. The vast amount survive their careers on the track and move on to either breeding farms or to other private homes.
That being said, horse racing is wrong. It is wrong for ANY horse to die, be uncomfortable or unhappy, be used and tossed out for the simple reason that I feel like it. For that matter, it is wrong for a horse to be used by me, soley as a means to my end, and not be abused.
Horse racing is simply exploitive. You can exploit someone without causing them to suffer, but it doesn’t make it right. In this case we are causing a number of these animals to suffer and lead intensely unhappy lives. It may be a smaller number, and we should recognize this, and find a better reason why it’s unacceptable
