Give Kids Healthy Plant-Based Meals

How can anyone say that what people eat is a free choice if our nation’s children have NO choice at all?

Most school lunches are meat and dairy based, not plant-based. Many don’t have a single vegan option and those that do usually offer the same boring option every single day while nonveg kids eat a wider variety of foods. It’s time for that to change. All kids deserve to know what healthy vegan foods are. All kids deserve more fruits and veggies in their lunches. All kids deserve a better choice.

The MFA blog says:

House bill H.R. 5504 would incorporate provisions of the Healthy School Meals Act and include an innovative pilot program to introduce more plant-based foods into the school lunch program. The House bill would also provide more funding for farm-to-school programs, nutrition education and wellness promotion activities. Additionally, H.R. 5504 would extend nutrition standards to all food sold in schools and give children from low-income households greater access to nutritious meals beyond regular school hours.

By inspiring kids to eat more plant-based meals the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act, H.R. 5504, not only has the potential to help nurture healthy eating habits for our nation’s youth, but could also help reduce the devastating impact that animal agriculture has on the environment and on animal welfare. So, please take a moment to contact Congress and ask them to pass the superior House bill, H.R. 5504, and reject the weaker Senate bill, S. 3307.

  1. This would be cool if the kids are also getting it at home… or if they have an adventristic spirit regarding food…..thing is if kids aren’t getting it @ home chances are they aren’t going to want the healthier stuff….I mean compare burgers and fries versus steamed broccoli you know what’s going to win in a typical situation…..

Personal experience….@ my grammar school ( I know years ago but still ) one day the lunch room ladies had gotten some eggrolls and I was one a few to go first eat them and then go back and ask for more ( my mom used to cook from home and I loved egg rolls) but most of the other kids looked @ them as though they were aliens and poked @ them then threw out most of them…… the ladies the werre serving the egg rolls may have thought I was crazy because I kept coming back for more…but to me eggrolls were normal and good to eat so I kept going back.

my thing is to go and help the parents do better food wise and you have a better chance of getting the kids…..

  3. Along with House bill H.R. 5504, HR 4870 The healthy Meals Act of 2010 also – takes a strong first step towards a healthier school lunch system. HR 4870 would improve children’s eating patterns by encouraging the inclusion of healthful plant-based meal options in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Plant-based meals could decrease children’s intake of high-calorie foods, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, by providing children with healthy vegetarian alternatives.

  4. Great Post! Thank you for sharing. I’m glad I stumbled across your blog this evening! I will definitely be coming back. I’m a physician who advocates a plant-based diet. I focus almost exclusively on the multitude of health benefits associated with a plant-based diet. Kind Regards, Jenna (www.theplantrx.com)
