For Meat-Eaters
The Environmental Working Group has created a helpful guide for nonvegans called THE MEAT-EATER’S GUIDE TO CLIMATE CHANGE + HEALTH.
They say:
U.S. meat consumption by U.S. adults exceeds the government’s Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of protein. According to one study, American men consume almost twice the recommended amount of protein. Scientific evidence (See Meat and your Health) is increasingly clear that eating large quantities of beef and processed meats increases our exposure to toxins and is linked to serious health problems such as heart disease, cancer and obesity.
The US produced 208 pounds of meat per person in 2009, 60 percent more than Europe. Producing this much meat requires large amounts of pesticides, chemical fertilizer, fuel, feed and water. It also generates greenhouse gases and large amounts of toxic manure and wastewater that pollute our water supply.
They ask meat-eaters to reduce their consumption of meat in order to protect the environment and to protect their own health.
Sounds like a good idea to me. Even though it’s not about veganism or animal rights, it will still have a net positive for animals since the issues of animal rights, the environment, and human health are strongly linked.
A tangential campaign is the Meatless Monday program which offers recipes and tips. Check it out at http://www.meatlessmonday.com/
