Eat Your Veggies
We vegans have been saying a vegan diet is healthy.
Heck, we have plenty of vegan people to prove it, some athletes no less.
Well, here’s some more evidence that at least some of our claims are true:
“People who adopt four principles for a healthy lifestyle can add as much as 14 years to their lives, a study revealed today.
“Researchers found that not smoking, taking exercise, drinking in moderation and eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day can have a huge impact on life expectancy.” from The Guardian.
The best part is how the vegans react.
With tongue in cheek, Mary at Animal Person calls it a “newsflash,” “stunning discovery,” and says,
“[T]here was no mention of the outstanding benefits of consuming the flesh of chickens or fish. Hmmm. Maybe we’re onto something with this vegan thing. Nah, there’s no evidence.
“Now, I’m not sure longevity is what it’s cracked up to be. However, it’s good to know that at least we are likely to have that option. And it’s good to have yet another study in our arsenal for people who like to think we’re wasting our time with all our blathering on about the importance of a diet rich in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.”
Meanwhile, this cynicism from Taste Better:
“Sadly, I doubt it’s going to make a difference in global eating habits, simply because it hasn’t yet, and I’m not at all trying to sound bleak. Lately I’ve been thinking that instead of focusing on the health arguments for veganism, we’ve got to think a little sideways and come up with more reasons for people to want to live. Wow, that does sound bleak, but think about it: we’ve got a population who’d literally rather die than go without a hamburger or eat some broccoli. Are their lives that sad?”
