Chipotle And Food Inc.

“Chipotle’s offer of free tickets to Food, Inc. would not seem to square up with the company’s beef procurement. That’s because Food, Inc. is critical of beef raised in large feedlots, yet Chipotle claims they buy some of their beef from Harris Ranch, a California operation with 100,000 cattle on feed in an 800-acre facility. Check out this map of the operation. Oops!! — Greg Henderson, Drovers editor.”

Interesting, at least.

  1. This has got to be one of the laziest examples of greenwashing I’ve ever seen. Feh.

  2. The greenwashing gets worse. Chipotle claims that “the issues raised by the film Food, Inc. are important and complex, and everything we do at Chipotle strives to address them.” But the director of Food, Inc Robert Kenner and the co-producer Eric Schlosser have criticized Chipotle for it’s failure to fully address the exploitation of farmworkers in Florida who pick tomatoes bought by the company. Find the open letter to Chipotle signed by them and other prominent sustainable food activists by going to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers website: http://www.ciw-online.org/letter_to_Chipotle.html

  3. It gets stranger still… MeatingPlace posted an inflamatory critique of Chipotle. Wouldn’t you know it — most of the comments are from “farmers” who now see their operations as “traditional” and are against Chipotle’s “new” management system. It’s like a world turned inside out:

” It’s time the traditional agr. groups spend more time informing their members of these type of companies that are not only segregating themselves with their many misleading definitions, but are now also intentionally defaming traditional producers by spreading misinformation. We should call for boycotts, etc. Some of their methods are not “sustainable” or more “humane”—-that’s why we moved to confinement! We have to stop letting them totally define these words to reflect what they are trying to do for a market segmentation and marketing program. ”

Warehouses that confine thousands of animals is now the “standard”…? And the “old McDonald” *happy* image is a threat! I suppose that’s what happens when the basic, fundamental premise is all wrong from the git-go.
