Change Your Voicemail

Mark Hawthorne just posted a list of ten things you can do to help animals. Here’s number two:

Add an animal-friendly message to your voice mail. If you’ve ever been put on hold (and who hasn’t?), chances are you’ve listened to a pre-recorded message touting commercial products and services. This same idea can be applied to animal rights using your home answering machine by asking callers to go veg. You can also do this on your cell phone. It can be as simple as recording your usual greeting and then adding, “Before you leave a message, I’d like to remind you that a great way to relieve animal suffering, help the planet and improve your health is to switch to a plant-based diet. For more information, please visit goveg.com.” Of course, your recording can promote any campaign or urge callers to adopt from shelters rather than buying from pet stores ― just keep it to one message or call to action per recording.

Obviously, you can suggest any website you like. You don’t have to stick to goveg.com, you could list tryveg.com or whyvegan.com or any number of others. Here are some options:

  1. This is probably one of the best ways to make people think vegans are obnoxious.

  2. Oh, please! It’s voicemail, not door-to-door proselytizing or late-night telemarketing! Get real, Nick.

We either stay silent and hope the omnis change their minds eventually or we do something and try to make a change in the world. I choose the latter.

  3. Gotta love Mark Hawthorne! Great ideas for spreading the message!

  4. Thanks for mentioning this idea, Elaine, and for all your efforts on behalf of animals.

  5. you can also plug vegstarterpack.com :) We love sending out free stuff to your non-veg friends!

  6. I think this is a great idea… For over a year my answering machine says this: Hello, you’ve reached the home of the Elliott’s and we’re a meat free household… Please leave a message – and remember: if you love animals… don’t eat them!

I don’t know how this could be termed “obnoxious” – perhaps more information than one wanted… But hey – it’s my phone in my home!

I think if we continue to tip-toe along always being so ultimately uber careful not to “offend” anyone’s “sensibilities” we will be absolutely silenced… I mean… gagged.

Speaking the truth in an informative (respectful) way should not be a threat to anyone unless they are thugs – In which case, do you really want to cower to them?
