Certified Humane Is Certified, But Not Humane
You may soon see labels in stores that read “certified humane.” This is a lie. It is not humane.
For example, the eggs with this label allow debeaking; they’ve just renamed it “beak trimming.” It’s the same thing and it’s terribly cruel. They cut off part of hens’ beaks to prevent them from pecking at themselves and each other.
Beak trimming is only necessary when confining hens in close proximity to one another and exposing them to other stressful elements. Otherwise, hens would not peck at themselves and each other. That is, if the hens lived truly happy, humane lives they wouldn’t be so stressed out that they’d pull all their feathers out and peck their mates to bloody pulps.
We, vegans would say beak trimming is never necessary, since egg production is not necessary. We don’t need to eat animal products, so we don’t. We don’t need to chop off chicken beaks or cram them into tiny spaces, so we don’t. We don’t need a “certified humane” label since we don’t eat foods that require humane treatment of animals because we, vegans, don’t think animals are food at all.
