California Takes Democracy More Seriously

ca-senate-committee

California has a new website for The Senate Committee on Food and Agriculture: www.californiasafefood.com

From the website:

“As the 5th largest supplier of food to the world, it is unquestionable that California has an obligation to ensure that food we grow in the golden state is as nutritious as it is safe.

“For too long consumers, the people who eat this food every day, have not had a voice at the table in Sacramento.  Instead, discussions have been dominated by the industry. [...]

“in order to make the most of this new forum we need to hear from you, the consumers.  [...]

“So please take the time to provide us with your input on topics and questions you would like us to address over the next year.

So go ahead, tell ‘em what you think. You can vote in the poll on the first page, which by the way, is currently showing that consumers are leaning towards becoming more animal-friendly:

and/or you can submit a comment to the committee here: http://www.californiasafefood.com/form.asp/csasp/DepartmentID.871/cs/SectionID.1847/csasp.html. You can even participate in the messageboard, if you like.

I think this is a great improvement. The more involved and informed consumers are, the better, because in general people care about animals, their health, and the environment.

  1. PS – USDA is revising the dietary guidelines. You can submit comments to them, too. Read more here:

  2. Wow, great heads up on the USDA rewrite. It’s exciting to read the comments posted so far: almost all of them call for a reduction in meat and dairy!

  3. I’ve been thinking about the USDA food guidelines. If Americans actually followed even the current ones, that would be huge. It would probably cut current meat and dairy consumption in half, it would lower the rates of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. It would slow climate change… I wonder what it would take to get people to actually follow the guidelines.
