Belatedly, A Challenge Winner…but…

Some of you may recall that I offered a challenge to our readers, last November:

The original post.

The summary:
Take ten bucks.
Go to a convenience store.
Buy vegan food that can be made into one meal – for one or more persons.

Additional water, dried herbs and spices, and nutritional yeast can be added.

A bonus if the meal can be made with a microwave at most.

Deadline was December 31, and the winner gets a vegan cookbook of his or her choosing from the vegan soapbox store.
————
Well, there weren’t a ton of entries. Two, actually, one of which was guesswork – the writer thought the items could be bought at a convenience store but hadn’t actually bought them. The other was by the esteemed Eccentric Vegan and was an actual purchase.

Her meal?
2 apples
PB&J sandwiches
bottled water
fritos

I also posted this challenge on Post Punk Kitchen (in “the basement”) and on Vegan Convenient and got zilch in entries, but did get questions which improved the challenge rules. The lack of real entries suggests that this is indeed a challenge.

Unfortunately, Ms. Eccentric cannot win this challenge because of a conflict of interest. She runs this blog and therefore excuses herself from competition posted here.

BUT that does not end it. I will be offering this challenge again and as a way to get the creative juices flowing I will offer two meals I created myself from one visit to a 7-11. Stay tuned! In the meantime, take some time looking over your local convenience stores, see what they offer.

  1. I’m impressed that E.V. was able to find apples at a convenience store!

I only have one convenience store nearby, but maybe I’ll stop by this week and see what I can find :)

  2. OOO tell me when the next entry is becasue I want to particpate… do you own ALL of those cookbooks!? :D

  4. Yes, convenience stores are abysmal. The meal mentioned above is about all you could find in a convenience store. Mine has french fries and tater tots and tortillas, but not refried beans. You would have to use the bean dip in the chip aisle. Then there’s pop and chips, which are vegan, although not healthy by any stretch (although that doesn’t keep me from eating them once in a while). :-)

  5. I will post the new challenge very soon. I did manage to make two actual – if not exciting – meals from a 7-11. I have also noticed that these stores are indeed getting even worse and that some are better than others in basic canned goods, for example. It goes without saying that the meals do not have to be super-healthy, low in fat or sodium or sugar…I mean, we can only do so much. And it’s only one meal.

  6. The minimart near my home has fruit by the register, vegan energy bars (like Larabar), corn chips, water, nuts and trail mixes, and even a few boxed and canned foods that could be vegan. They do not offer soy milk or fresh vegetables. So, guess what I did?

I asked them if they’d consider adding a few more foods. I specifically asked for soy milk and non-dairy frozen treats like sorbet or coconut milk ice cream because those are the kinds off things I would be interested in buying on a quick run to the convenience store. They happily added my request to the pile.

Perhaps in the near future I will have the option of getting soy milk while I fill my car’s gas tank.

  7. Looking forward to when you re-post the contest. I didn’t get a chance to do it last time around, but I will definitely participate this time around. I love a good challenge.
