All Children Deserve Safe, Healthy Food
The Healthy School Lunch Campaign encourages schools to offer more healthy low-fat, cholesterol-free options. The campaign’s key message: Foods served in schools should promote the health of all children.
Sounds good, right? Well, it is. But the White House objects. They don’t like the campaign ads that feature a mere reference to the Obama girls. The Washington Post reports:
“Within 24 hours of the [health school lunches] signs’ appearance, the White House asked the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to take down the ads, which feature Jasmine Messiah, a vegetarian who attends a Miami-Dade County public school that, she says, offers no vegetarian or vegan lunch options.”
I’ll make a deal with President Obama and the rest of the US government:
When they stop feeding our nation’s children contaminated meat products and start feeding our kids healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables, then I might consider complaints about mentioning the President’s daughters a more valid concern. But until our government stops buying poisoned meat for the National School Lunch Program and feeding it to children who have no other option but to eat it, the White House hasn’t got a leg to stand on.
Get real. If they’re concerned about the safety of children, they should act like it!
- All children deserve healthy lunches, not just the rich kids.
- When the USDA finds safety violations at meat suppliers for the National School Lunch Program, they shouldn’t sit idly by, they should do something!
- The problem is big: the underlying issue is the meat industry’s reliance on antibiotics to keep animals alive while in cramped, filthy conditions. This spreads disease.
- And beyond health, children deserve basic respect.
