Alex, be encouraged. To everything there is a time and an appointed purpose. Frankly, I can't see how there is any purpose to the cruelty of factory farms and animal exploitation. But, I've seen this truth explicit over and over and over in my life and the lives of my friends, family and colleagues and so I believe that even in the most horrific of evils and suffering, there is the possibility of redemption. Haven't we all fallen short of the mark and yet, here we are, forgiven, renewed somehow and healing? Without our failures and sins and their inherent ties to suffering and repentance, would we even be the people we are? They opened doors in our hearts we didn't know were there or which we had closed. But when opened, the light came in, we were made new and became better.

There's something bigger than us at work with us in this cause but it will move in it's own time and purpose. When it does, hearts will be opened, light will poor in, and ALL will be made new, especially that which we thought beyond redemption. For although sin abounds, grace abounds all the more. This is the nature and essence of the universe. Believe it, trust it, rest in it.

Please don't despair. E.B. White once said that it was difficult for him to plan his day not knowing whether he should enjoy the world or change it. I think we need to do both. There is already much that is beautiful in this world that we can enjoy and be healed from and blessed by, and for which we can be thankful. Then we can rejoin with renewed strength and vigor the flow of grace and our good work for God's creatures.

I'm sorry you feel overwhelmed - With all you do... and all there is to keep up with - it's no wonder.

I never knew that about female pig-flesh vs. male pig-flesh. It is depressing. It is vulgar. But this is yet more information that people didn't know before... It only adds to the miserable unplesantness of meat eating. More reasons for people to shun the habit...

This might make you smile - Today I went to comment on 3 different animal ag sites... On each one a vegan (or 2) was there before me... With a sound, coherent statement! The information IS spreading... I know there's hope because our message and cause is true.

Finally, if it weren't for a global market and all the government bailouts to the industry - they would be in a world of hurt. They can't dodge reality forever... {{{patience}}}

Hi Matt, it's all just extremely disgusting and sad to me. It's one thing when people say they prefer the taste of animals over plants. That's hard enough to hear and accept, but when they prefer to eat my sex (female) over your sex... it just reaches a whole new level. I am literally sickened by this whole idea.

I don't think you need to end on a sad note. Did you read the whole Wikipedia entry? According to that entry, castration is seen as cruel now, and there are alternatives that are being used:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boar_taint#New_methods

Not that this solves everything, and I know there is still castration going on, but at least people see that there is something wrong with this and are trying to do something about it, within their meat eating paradigm.

I went to hear the author speak in Brookline last night, and someone asked him about the vegan vs. vegetarian thing. He admitted that he's not yet vegan, but he thinks it's the right thing to do, and he basically apologized for not (yet) going all the way. He also said he started the book without much understanding of the terminology, so he used "vegetarian" as the default, basically out of ignorance.

Your review of this book was most fair and respected the limited agenda of the author. A vegan is subject to ridicule, difficulty is finding footwear, awkwardness with family members when eating out and many many other things. We can empathize with suffering but really can't compare notes with the creatures tortured. How sad that few, very few persons are willing to take a posture of compassion greater than the one held by their parents, grandparents, and friends. "If daddy hunted, and grandpa hunted, and mamma and grandma cooked and served it,...its okay isn't it?" This stunted mental and emotional growth is somewhat at the root of the problem. I empatise with your sorrow. I, too, feel impotent against the magnitude of the problem.
