A Little Cafe In A Little Town

A reviewer on happycow.net called it staying in limbo. But Morro Bay, California is a long way from that place. Some people actually like being away from the big cities and in touch with clean air, beauty in all directions, and friendly people. I’m sorry that particular reviewer couldn’t get into the place, but he or she certainly enjoyed eating at the Shine Cafe.
The Shine Cafe is a little cafe in the back of a health food store. It doesn’t sound promising but it is amazingly good and a good place to remember if you find yourself in the former fishing village. Morro Bay has never been pretentious like many other coastal cities, and its downtown reflects its nature. The Sunshine Health Food store is right on Morro Bay Blvd, a skip up from Main Street.
The health food store is also a bit of a surprise, in that it carries fresh organic produce in small quantities, along with many foods you’d otherwise have to find at one of the larger whole foods markets.
The cafe consists of a small kitchen at the left rear, a table or two on the right, and a large blackboard above advertising menu items. Fortunately, there are several small tables in front of the store as well, on the sidewalk. The food is all vegetarian and mostly vegan. It appears that everything can be made vegan. For a small hole-in-the-wall place, the food is attractive, nicely seasoned, and generously sized. The menu items range from tacos to pizzas to soups, with ingredients from black beans to tempeh to lots and lots of fresh vegetables. It’s a lovely little treasure in an area where seafood and steak predominate.

That salad looks tasty! Yum
