"If plants feel pain, we ought to consume them directly as opposed to wasting them through food production: sending 15-25 pounds of plant protein through a nonhuman to get 1 edible pound of animal protein in return is a lot of unnecessary suffering given that we could simply eat all those plants directly."

Actually we only need to eat our actual protein requirements now, which in your ratio would mean 1 pound of plant protein, thus saving 14-24 pounds of plants.

This also reduces the deforestation, as well as reducing the killing of insects and fieldmice in the farming and harvesting process.

By the way, do they anaesthetise their asparagus before boiling them? Would they ever consider chopping up a live baby pig on their kitchen counter in front of their children? I don't think so.

Its pointless to defend a hypothetical position, as people will keep on moving the goalposts. Make it real. Make it about them, in their lives. Are they willing to cause less suffering? That's what matters.

I saw Elaine's comment and Meghan's.... a few other brillian vegan writers has attempted to set this author straight.... I'm still digesting "harvesting animals causes no harm" - what a crock! How could anyone fairly "intelligent" ever direct themselves deliberately into the meat industry anyway? I guess if thats your "plan" you swallow and make up what ever BS you need to....

And the comparison of the baby pig in one hand and brick in the other..... great visuals! I'm at a loss sometime explaining the involuntary killing of insects & animals during veg harvests.... I have a cow in one hand and a cricket in the other.... If one HAS to go - guess what, I'm letting the cow live. I'm sure some would argue that's "speciesist".... but really, there's no way for "zero impact" unless I undo my entire life - So the "harm" is justifiable in the most extreme of circumstances. But of course, that's usually where arguments and reasoning take us - Good post. Thanks!

"veganism is the morally correct choice even if plants suffer because of the inefficiency and wastefulness inherent in funneling plant protein through nonhumans so as to produce animal protein."

That's what I usually say. I say something along the lines of that I can't be certain about anyone's suffering but my own, but I have good reason to believe animals (including other humans) feel pain and I lack good reason to believe plants feel pain. But I can do better. I can reduce the potential amount of suffering I impose upon any living being by choosing to only consume plants and not animals.
