It’s an info sheet from the New York Times that compares and contrasts cruelty and cost of three kinds of confinement devices for egg-producing hens. The fact sheet is extremely informative. For example, it says:

  • 97% of all eggs produced in the United States are from hens that live in tightly packed battery cages, with no way to roam outside.
  • 2% of US eggs are from cage-free birds, which live exclusively indoors, in large barns.
  • 1% of US eggs are from free-range birds that have the option to go outdoors. Animal welfare advocates say this is often a phantom access. Doors are small and don’t accommodate the whole flock, or they are open for limited times.
  • United Egg Producers estimates that 15 percent of US egg-laying hens are raised by farmers who do not participate in its voluntary animal welfare program or meet its minimum standards. These birds are squeezed into an average space of about 45 to 50 square inches apiece, or about 7 by 7 inches.

Please, share this information with others!

  1. Horrible! Thank goodness, it is VERY easy to avoid eating eggs!

  2. I think we should all become egg-intolerant. :)

  3. The United Egg Producers is a discredited trade organization with a sordid history of consumer fraud and animal cruelty. The “UEP Certified” program allows hens to be confined in cages that provide each animal less space than a sheet of paper to spend her life. More at http://www.humanesociety.org/uep
